QUIM HEREU

THE STRAMBOTISM

The Strambotism summed up the spirit of Catalonia: Seny & Rauxa (Prudence and Temerity) . The creative process requires both in constant balance. Rauxa wich forces to have outburst of boundless imagination where known form are transformed, giving birth to the most estravagant scenes, incredibly strange and fantastic creatures. In one word: Strambotic. The basic, essential ingredient that will make possible the entire creative process, is the imagination that in very highly dosis and mixed with cunning to alter and modify the properties and forms inherent in the objects involved in the painting, make the final result more unusual (rauxa). Always looking for a balance of the composition, rhythm and a harmony in which the drawing is very present, using the reflective approach, a job well done, and premeditated thirst for perfection (Seny). . * "ESTRAMBOTE" is and invented word ++ The last name Hereu means "heir " in catalan.

Alongside his career as a painter, he studied Industrial Engineering.

He worked as an engineer for a short time and then devoted himself to painting.

Drawing was a refuge ever since childhood, where fantastic beings lived together in imagined landscapes that he saw daily. Definitely a self- thaught person, he discovered the great artists of the Renaissance, romantic and surreal art, and became fascinated by the technical execution of the painting and drawing perfectionism.

The land where he was born and raised, L’Empordà, land of wonder, fairies, witches and furious winds (La Tramuntana) would complete the influence that later led him to create his strambotic visions.

Two artist are powerful influators for metarealistic and dreamy themes: De Chirico and Delvaux.

Hereu is attracted to the dark and melancholic atmospheres of De Chirico and Delvaux’s provocative characters.

In 1983 he established his first studio in his hometown of Girona (Catalonia) where he exhibited his work in recognized galleries.

However, the relationship with these art galleries did not last long, Quim start feeling creatively limited.

Hereu began his journeys around the world looking at deserts, ruins, and exotic cultures to recreate in his new paintings, which were beginning to reflect the artist's predilection for large format.

Other studios were replacing the first, in search of a living space that could accommodate increasingly large racks, until in 2000, he established his studio in an old and spacious nineteenth century factory. There he started to produce large-scale artwork to sell to art

collectors from around the world.

Since 2006, Quim Hereu is leading an ambitious art project called The Stram Project , whose main objetive is to spread worldwide a new artistic movement born in Catalonia "The Strambotism" through a spectacular collection of the world's largest oil paintings on canvas,(6 x 12 meters), plus a 10 paintings (2 x 3.4 meters) showing 10 cities of the world seen through the prism of the strambotism.
